KIMBERLY PARKS

Attorney

Creating realistic plans with compassion

“I fell in love with elder law by accident. I started working with family caregivers and saw how they really wanted to do the best they could for their loved ones, but they didn’t understand Medicaid and they didn’t understand powers of attorney or probate. Suddenly I knew I wanted to be able to lift as much of the burden off them as I could--because the work they were doing is not something that everyone can do.”

Kimberly Parks helps families prepare for and deal with challenging issues facing seniors. She melds the practice of elder law and estate planning to serve the full range of client needs. She also guides families through probate and estate administration and creates plans to establish Medicaid eligibility and care for loved ones with special needs.

At all times, she strives to ensure clients understand their options and the legal realities. When a client asks for a solution not available under the law, she works to find an alternative option that accomplishes their objectives.

She helps families prioritize their needs and develop plans that support their best interests. “I am not going to try to sell a client on something that they don't need,” she explains. “I am not going to try to tell a client that they absolutely need to do something when they could get by with what they have.”

Kimberly wants clients to feel comfortable in her presence, and she makes every effort to be available when they have questions or want to discuss options. She hopes clients understand that the choices always belong to them, and if they want to take steps that defy expectations, they have the right to do so.

Prior to joining the team at Bassett Murray Law Group, PLLC, Kimberly served as an attorney at the Elder Law & Advocacy Center at Neighborhood Legal Services Michigan, advising older adults and caregivers on estate planning, Medicaid, and probate issues. She earned her law degree from the University of Michigan after receiving her bachelor’s degree from Eastern Michigan University. Currently, she serves as an active member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys and is on the Council for the Elder Law and Disabilities Rights Section of the State Bar of Michigan.

Outside of the office, Kimberly and her husband fight the urge to overprotect their young son as they enjoy family outings together and exploring the world with their two dogs.
